Socrates Asking Questions
Welcome to Mr. Hopper's 7th Grade Science at Emerald Coast Middle School!
On this page I will give anyone who is interested a brief description of my class, expectations and concept of my teaching style.
My Class follows the State of Florida’s Guidelines for the material to be covered.
The topics include: The Practice of Science; The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge; The Role of Theories, Laws, and Hypotheses, and Models; Earth Structures; Forms of Energy; Energy Transfer and Transformations; Diversity and Evolution of Living Organisms; Heredity and Reproduction; Interdependence of All Things.
I have high expectations for my students and believe that ALL students, with proper EFFORT on their part, can achieve great things. The 7th Grade can be a difficult time for some students as they are given more responsibilities for their education than they are accustomed to. This is alright. It is part of learning and growing.
I am a firm believer in the Socratic Method of instruction. This consists of asking questions instead of giving answers to students. The concept is that by the teacher asking a leading questions, students learn the material by answering the questions and at the same time develop critical thinking skills that we need to cultivate in our young people.
ECMS is a 21st Century School. We have the latest technology available and will make extensive use of it. A word of caution, however. Technology is wonderful, but one must understand how to properly use it and learn its limitations! I will teach that as well. Being a 21st Century School is more than technology, it is a way of thinking.

Advanced vs. Regular Classes: I will provide the same sort of instruction and information as any classes taught in the 7th Grade. The difference in classes will be as I say, “How much of the “Fun” stuff can we do?” This will depend solely upon the students. If the students cooperate and do all the necessary preparatory work, then the class will do the enrichment activities that I have planned. However, it will require that the students complete their assignments and show the degree of understanding that I demand. If a class doesn’t do the assigned work, cooperate or show the degree of mastery I expect, then there will be no enrichment activities until such time as they comply with expectations.
