Syllabus for 7th Grade Science 4th 9 Weeks Hopper
The E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center is the primary focus for the 4th 9 Weeks. The Center has provided an extensive hand’s on field work and classroom program which we will use. Covered in the program are Big Ideas 1, 2, 3, 15 and 17. The concept is Big Ideas 1: The Practice of Science, 2: The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge, and 3: The Roles of Theories, Laws and Hypotheses, and Models will be incorporated into the lessons covered in Big Idea 17: Interdependence of Organisms and the Environment and Big Idea 15: Diversity and Evolution of Living Organisms. The dates for the Biophilia and supporting tasks are: Session 1: 1-4 May, Session 2: 8-11 May Additional information can be found on the Biophilia website @ http://www.nokuse.org/index.html and http://www.eowilsoncenter.org/welcome.html. Materials covered will be graded and the final project report will count as a major test grade.
Students will be required to review the weekly schedule to keep them informed as to the week’s activities and my webpage at the school website.
Testing: There will be 3 quizzes, 1 Big Idea Test and a comprehensive Final Exam.
There will be three Group Project Based Learning subjects: Mass Extinction Events, Communities and Interactions and Endangered Species of Walton County. The rubrics will be made available to the groups when the time approaches. Each of the projects will consist of a Research Paper and a Presentation. The Research Papers will count as a Major Project Grade. The Presentations will count as a Quiz Grade. The daily logs and project check points can count as daily grades.
The heart of the class will be a properly maintained Science Notebook and Investigation Book and Biophila Project Notebook. The individual notebook will be divided into 4 separate sections as per instructions in the Classroom Procedures Handout. The Biophila Project Notebook notebook will contain the entire project from start to finish. The Scientific Investigation Notebook will cover the project.
The classes will be graded according to my policy. This policy has been posted on line as well as discussed with the students. See grading policy.
